Wine from Lebanon? Who knew?……Chateau Musar

One of the wines featured at Tuesday’s tasting stirred a lot of interest and certainly conversation. That wine was Hochar from Chateau Musar. Chateau Musar is a Lebanese winery established in 1930 by Gaston Hochar. It is located in an old 17th century castle overlooking the Mediterranean inGhazir,Lebanon; a town located about 15 miles north ofBeirut. The vineyards are located about 25 miles east ofBeirutin the Beqaa valley. Vines have been cultivated in the Beqaa valley for thousands of years. It was in this valley, in Baalbeck that the Romans erected their largest temple ever and hundreds of year later built a temple devoted to Bacchus.

Grown at an elevation of 3000 feet, red varietals include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Carignan, Grenache and Mourvedre and are the base of all of Musar’s red wines. Blends change with each vintage depending on the forces of nature. Because of the political tensions and war in the area, the employees of Musar work in the most high-risk environment compared to any other vineyard worker. Since its establishment, despite the dangers, with the exception of the 1976 and 1984 vintages, wine has been produced each year at the Chateau.
